Our history

Our history dates back to 1953 when a group of parents of hearing impaired children started a charitable organisation called Oral Deaf Appeal. Their purpose was to provide an education service to help their children learn to speak.

Prior to this time there was no service for very young deaf and hearing impaired children in Queensland.

Enormous contribution, both financial and hands-on over the years from parents and community organisations, in particular the Lions Club of Ekibin, resulted in the purchase of the premises at O’Loan Street Yeerongpilly and the training and employment of specialist staff – teachers and therapists (speech language pathologists, physiotherapist and occupational therapist).

During the 1960s:
  • the Oral Deaf School Appeal changed its name to the Association for the Pre-School Education of Deaf Children
  • the Queensland Government’s Education Department took over employment of the teachers
  • the Association for the Pre-school Education of Deaf Children started to receive Commonwealth funding to subsidise the employment of the speech pathologists, physiotherapists and occupational therapists.

Today Yeerongpilly Centre for Young Deaf Children is made up of:
  • teachers and teacher aides (Queensland Government – Department of Education,Training and the Arts / Education Queensland)
  • speech pathologists, physiotherapist and occupational therapist (subsidised by Commonwealth Special Education grant / Non Schools Organization funding through Association for the Pre-School Education of Deaf Children and donations).

The Association for the Pre-school Education of Deaf Children continues to operate as a charity, relying on donations supplemented by Commonwealth funding to maintain the very valuable therapy services provided at the Yeerongpilly Centre for Young Deaf Children.
